In The Rough (2021)
30 September 2021 - 14 January 2022
We touch things to assure ourselves with reality. We touch the objects of our love. We touch the things we form. Our tactile experiences are elemental. If we reduce their range, as we do when we reduce the necessity to form things ourselves, we grow lopsided. We are apt today to overcharge our gray matter with words and pictures, that is, with material already transposed into a certain key, reformulated material, and to fall short in providing for a stimulus that may touch off our creative impulse, such as unformed material ”in the rough”. –Anni Albers, 1965
”We touch things to assure ourselves with reality.” These words by weaver Anni Albers are taken from her book On Weaving where Albers describes how the absence of unformed material make us ”fall short in providing for a stimulus that may touch off our creative impulse”. For the five artists in the exhibition In The Rough, a title borrowed from Albers’ text, however, it is the forming of material that constitutes the foundation of their respective practice. In the objects shown, raw material and their components are tested, questioned and reshaped in order to open up for new interpretations of our collective world.
